HELLO, hello, hello, what’s going on here then?

Schoolchildren sat side by side with firemen and policemen this Friday as a pupil voice group came together in support of the emergency services.

United, which comprises schools in Houghton and Dunstable, held a meeting at Dunstable Fire Station to discuss the ways they could best support the towns’ policemen and firemen.

The meeting was attended by two children from Slip End Lower, Lark Rise Academy, Downside Lower, Thornhill Lower, Ashton St Peter Lower, Hadrian Lower, Streetfield Middle, Ashton Middle, Kings Houghton Middle, Queensbury Upper and All Saints Academy.

The group, organised by Lark Rise Academy, gives schools a chance to spread their good practice with others using children as spokespersons.

United, which has been meeting for over 12 years, were able to speak to White Watch from Dunstable Fire Station. They told pupils how important the fire service was and how the children and their schools could support them in saving lives and understanding the role of the fire service in the community.

The schools were impressed with the community fire station and the range of tasks the fire service do to help them.

Bedfordshire Police were also in attendance. Children and Young People Development Officer Richard Denton explained how the Police can work with schools to make the region safe to live in, develop good relationships with young people and reduce the crime rates through being good citizens and community partners.

The children decided that they need to know their local police officers better and they need to visit schools more often.

As usual the meeting was a huge success and the group has already planned further sessions on sustainability, young cooperatives, classroom environments and inter school events.
