IT wasn’t just sporting skills showcased at Central Bedfordshire College when special guests from the London Organising Committee of the Olympics Games (LOCOG) came to visit.
The Dunstable campus pulled out all the stops for the VIP delegate team, led by LOCOG CEO Paul Deighton, who dropped by as part of their tour around Bedfordshire.
Staff and media students presented a DVD produced at the Kingsway college and the visitors then took part in workshops about the DVD production.
Paul and his team then joined in with a sporting event at Dunstable Leisure Centre hosted and run by college Young Ambassadors with 50 pupils from Hawthorne Lower School in Houghton Regis.
This allowed the guests to experience, first-hand, the work that the college has been doing as part of the Get Set network, promoting the 2012 Games values within the community.
Mr Deighton said: “It was a pleasure to see firsthand the excellent work going on at Central Bedfordshire College. The students were a credit to the college and it was clear to see that a lot of time, effort and dedication had gone into the Get Set presentations we saw.
“The London 2012 Games provide a fantastic opportunity to encourage and inspire young people to take up sport, develop new skills and go beyond their personal best. It was wonderful to see the students embracing the Games and taking advantage of the opportunities available to them.”
The visit ended with a tasty lunch prepared by hospitality and catering students.
Ali Hadawi CBE, College Principal, said: “We are delighted to have been selected by LOCOG as the only further education college in Bedfordshire to be visited, due to the massive effort and achievement from our students at Central Bedfordshire College.
“This has been an excellent opportunity for our students to showcase their talents and skills to the community and build on their experience within their chosen fields to help them in their future.
“I believe it is essential that we, as an organisation, embrace the 2012 Games and recognise the opportunities this massive event provides for our young people and the community as a whole. I am very proud of our students and the work they have achieved.”
In March the college will start a 2012 Disability Games Club which will involve working with local schools for children with special educational needs. A 2012 metre run will also be held in Houghton Regis, to mark one year to go before the Olympic games start.
