Net result for sporty mums

WHAT better way to gear up for the Olympic Games than by reigniting your love for a sport?

Dunstable Netball Club was set up by a group of mums concerned about the amount of opportunities for middle school pupils to get involved with their favourite sport.

After spotting a gap in the market, the club evolved to include a separate session open to adults of all abilities wishing to develop their netball skills, in partnership with the Get Back Into scheme.

England Netball provide the club with a level two coach, Keeley Glenister, while club treasurer Karen Malone has passed her level one qualification. Volunteer mums Darcy Patterson, Amanda Harnett and Lorraine Hardie are about to take their coaching qualifications.

Darcy, whose 11-year-old daughter Jodie attends the sessions, said: “We decided that the kids should not have all the fun and started to meet in the playground once a week in the evening. We have great coaches and it’s a brilliant way to get fit, have fun and make friends.”

The weekly junior sessions are open to students in Year 5 to Year 9 and take place on Thursdays between 6pm and 7.15pm, priced £3 a child.

The club has netball tournaments coming up, as well as an inter-club league involving prizes at the end of term.

Adult sessions, open to all, start at 7.30pm on Thursdays and cost £4. Both classes are held at All Saints Academy in Houghton Road.
