TOWN will never again produce the likes of another Ricky Hill while they remain where they are, head of youth Gregg Broughton has warned following the departure of starlet Tarum Dawkins to Arsenal, writes Mark Wood.
The Premier League giants fought off 14 other top-flight teams and one Scottish Premier League club to secure the 16-year-old’s signature last week, in what could turn out to be a massive deal for the Hatters if he goes on to be a success.
But with the big clubs keeping a close eye on the most talented youngsters in the country, Broughton issued a stark warning.
He said: “The big difference between now and the 80s and 90s, the bigger clubs’ scouting networks are that much wider and they have spent so much money on it no-one slips through the net now.
“I think if football now was like it was in the 1980s Ricky Hill wouldn’t have made it into our first team squad, someone would have come and bought Ricky Hill.”
