THERE was a great show of support for Houghton Regis Leisure Centre at its free open day.
More than 700 people joined in the fun, which included sports events, face-painting, a car boot sale and a tea dance.
The day was organised by the centre and Houghton Regis Leisure Centre Action Group. A group spokeswoman said: “The group proved that with good advertising and organisation, the centre can be made to buzz again.”
The action group also ran a schools mural contest, with pupils drawing pictures of what they would miss most if the centre closed.
First prize went to King’s Houghton Middle School. Runners-up were Hillcrest School and Hawthorn Park Lower School. The murals are on show in the Houghton Regis Library foyer until February 3.
