FORMER housemate Jake Howells struggled to excuse his old friend Ryan Charles’ dismissal in Luton’s 2-0 defeat of Newport County AFC at Kenilworth Road on Saturday, writes Mark Wood.
Having just signed on loan for the Exiles from Cambridge United, the 22-year-old striker dived in two-footed on Dan Gleeson late in the first half.
Although he appeared to get a bit of the ball, he was promptly shown a straight red by referee Karl Evans for a dangerous tackle.
The Hatters netted their first moments later and Howells said: “I just said to him, it’s a stupid challenge, there’s no need to do it.
“It’s his debut for Newport and he’s trying to get a permanent contract there but you can’t be going into tackles like that.”
