SPEED limits could be slowed down to 20mph on more than 90 roads in south-west Dunstable, if a road safety idea gets the go-ahead.
Central Beds Council is proposing to create a 20mph zone in those residential areas, saying it wants to improve safety for all road users.
Consultation on the idea ends on Friday, December 2.
The road safety scheme could cost about £30,000, subject to detailed assessment and approval processes.
One neighbour, Charles Sieling, of Langdale Road, said: “In certain roads, I think it would be a good idea – but this seems excessive.”
Details of the proposed order and the affected roads can be checked out at Dunstable Library and via www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk.
The council says the scheme also aims to improve the quality of the environment and help promote walking and cycling.
Now the team is looking at potentially bringing in a road traffic regulation to set up the slow-down zone.
Executive councillor Brian Spurr said: “We are currently consulting on a comprehensive list of 20mph speed limits on roads in Dunstable, following views collected as part of the Local Area Transport Consultation last year.
“The Local Area Transport Plan is about improving travel choice, whilst also making better use of the existing road network for all users.
“This proposed scheme will not only improve safety, but encourage more walking and cycling – which will help to maximise the health and environmental benefits for the area.
“Residents and road users have the opportunity to comment on the proposals as part of the consultation which ends on Friday, December 2.”
