The disgusting theft of a Dunstable pub’s charity collection tin has inspired staff to organise a special event in order to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital.
The tin – which contained loose change intended for the children’s hospital – was taken following a fundraising cake sale event at the Premier Inn hotel in Poynters Road on Wednesday, November 28.
The thief took the tin from the front desk at about 8pm after telling receptionist Hannah Evelyn and assistant manager Sue Ford he was waiting for his girlfriend.
Sue told the Gazette: “He took it right from under our noses. We feel very silly. The nerve!
“He shook the box to check how much money was in it then put it up his jumper.”
Manager Tim Holder said: “It’s all such a shame. It’s like stealing from a baby’s mouth.
“We were doing a huge cake sale at the time so there will have been a considerable amount of change in it.
Management and staff at Halfway House are now organising an event on Saturday, December 22 to recouperate the lost funds, and hopefully raise even more for Great Ormond Street.
Hannah’s daughter Tamara, a local singer-songwriter who performed at the Love Luton festival, is scheduled to make an appearance.
Beds Police are looking for a white male of slim build, who was wearing a red cap and grey hooded top. Call 101 with information.
