Anger as vandals attack bus shelters

A number of bus shelters were vandalised in Houghton Regis on Friday, leaving broken glass strewn across the pavements.

Five shelters in Parkside alone were damaged, including those pictured here in Neptune Square.

Parkside Councillor Rita Egan said it is a “significant problem”, and she was disappointed that glass rather than reinforced perspex was used for the shelters in the first place.

Councillor Egan said: “It’s dreadful. The people running the busway are so upset, they wanted the shelters to look lovely but they didn’t consult with us, and we knew that if they were glass shelters they’d get smashed. As soon as people realised they were glass they went round breaking them. The way things are going there will be no bus shelters left by the time the busway opens.”

Councillor Egan is also concerned about the cost of replacing the bus shelters, and is asking people to come forward with information to find the culprits.

She said: “There’s been names and accusations on Facebook, but you can’t do that. We need people to come forward with proper evidence.

“This makes the whole community look bad when in fact it’s a small minority.”

A Central Beds Council spokesperson said: “The council is aware of the damage and is in the process of cleaning up the glass. There have been a number of bus stops damaged or vandalised in Houghton Regis, we are liaising with the police to see if we can resolve this problem.”
