Motorists and pedestrians have complained about a traffic system “deathtrap” in Houghton Regis after a youth was involved in a collision with a car
A teenager was hospitalised after the incident on Monday, November 12, at a zebra crossing which has been deemed “too close” to the roundabout that links New Bedford Road and the High Street.
Almost a week previously, on November 6, Houghton Regis Town Councillor Alan Winter wrote to Amey, the highways agency responsible for roads in Beds.
He wote: “People are saying the crossing is too near the junction. People are saying that cars are not stopping at the roundabout when there is traffic already on it with the right of way.
“Could you please have a look at these things and consider making changes as required.”
The road is now manned by two crossing patrol officers.
News of the road accident provoked a reaction from Houghton residents on Facebook.
User Susan Dury said: “I knew this would happen. It will only happen again, unfortunately, unless it is moved.”
Christine Smith said: “Let’s hope the crossing is moved soon before some poor person is seriously injured or killed.”
Tracy Draper said: “Yes what a bad road, saw the accident not pleasant, the road is a deathtrap and it’s getting worse, especially trying to pull out of St Michaels Avenue.
“As for the crossing there’s going to be a bad accident there soon.
“I was almost knocked down with my son as a car wasn’t going to stop.”
Central Beds Councillor Brian Spurr said: “We also know that people are concerned about the proximity of an existing zebra crossing to the new roundabout and we’re very sorry to hear of an incident there recently. Zebra crossings are introduced along ‘desire lines’ for pedestrians which is why it is currently there.
“We have committed to doing all we can to help ease the traffic situation and we believe that the new roundabout and other improvements will help in the long-term.”
“We would like to reassure road users and pedestrians that full initial safety audits have already taken place and further safety checks will follow shortly. What do you think about the roundabout in question? Join the debate on Facebook or tweet @Dunstable_Rick.
