Dunstable could still become part of a new parliamentary constituency along with Luton North, if the latest controversial proposals from the Boundary Commission get the go-ahead.
A petition signed by more than 2,000 people, opposing proposed changes to the South West Beds constituency, was presented to the House of Commons earlier this year by Andrew Selous, MP for the area.
Latest proposals still suggest creating a Luton North and Dunstable constituency.
Caddington and Kensworth could be included in a Mid Beds and Harpenden constituency.
Houghton Regis could remain in a revamped South West Beds constituency.
The Boundary Commission wants to reduce the number of serving MPs in England from 650 to 600, and is running an eight-week consultation on the proposals before publishing its final set in 2013.
Mr Selous said: “I very much do not want to lose Dunstable from my constituency.
“I have spent 11 years fighting for Dunstable and lots of things that I have fought for have either happened or are about to happen, so I very much want to continue representing Dunstable.”
He pointed out that the changes may not go through.
The MP said: “From a personal point of view, I would be desperately sad not to carry on representing Dunstable.”
He added: “The town is very much on the up at the moment and I would like to go on being part of that.”
The MP said: “I have not met anyone in Dunstable who wants Dunstable to go into a Luton North and Dunstable constituency. Everyone I have met wants the town to stay in the current area.”
He feels that Dunstable has a “much greater affinity” with areas such as Houghton Regis and Leighton Buzzard than it has with Luton.
“That’s where most people in the town feel their identity lies,” he said. “That’s what people say to me, very strongly.”
