A campaign by Central Beds Council will spread this vital message to drivers: “Stop Means Stop for school crossing patrols.”
The team want to make people aware that drivers are legally obliged to obey the patrol Stop sign.
Next week, patrol officers will wear orange tabards with “Stop Means Stop” on them.
When safe to do so, they will hand out stickers and bookmarks to pedestrians.
Under the law, as soon as the Stop sign is raised, drivers must be prepared to halt, even if the officer has not yet stepped into the road.
Once the officer has stepped into the road with the sign, motorists must stop and must not drive on until the patrol officer and any accompanying children are clear of the road.
Drivers who do not stop could be prosecuted, fined up to £1,000 and given three penalty points.
Councillor Budge Wells, deputy executive member for sustainable communities (services), said: “Our school crossing patrols provide an absolutely invaluable service, escorting children and adults across busy roads to school safely.
“We want to raise awareness that the Stop sign they carry is a legal sign because we want to protect our children and patrols.
“Drivers who put the lives of children or patrols at risk by not stopping must be dealt with, and will be reported to the police.”
