A new Government-funded £4.9m initiative to encourage the public to re-think their travel options was launched by Central Beds Council in Dunstable last week.

The Travel Choices project aims to get people to re-evaluate journeys they would normally make by car to ease congestion and pave the way for a brighter economic future.

The project’s launch at the Grove Theatre on Friday, September 14, was attended by councillors as well as business and transport delegates.

The three-year scheme will make advice and information about alternative transport available to residents in Dunstable and Houghton Regis.

Councillor Nigel Young said. “This project fits in with our bigger vision to boost economic activity and growth.

“By reducing congestion and offering better options for travel, we will improve access to jobs and education.”

Personal Journey Planners will be visiting homes over the next few months, working with individuals to plot travel plans tailored to residents’ needs.

Local businesses and community groups will also be contacted, to see how they can benefit, and improve their services.

Councillor Angela Barker said: “If it isn’t that far, why not walk? It’s free, easy and you can see more of our lovely area.”
