Camping hol led to ‘en-tente’ cordiale

Vive la Dunstable! A camping holiday in France turned into a sporting tour de force for the Rawson family, from Luton Road.

Pourquoi? Well, the Rawsons and other relatives formed Old Dunstablians and Young Dunstablians teams for a beach touch rugby tournament.

And yes, you guessed it. Success was a fait accompli – or as we say in England, both teams won!

It all happened in Brittany, in Kerity, and involved organised French teams in their strips, other locals, and holidaymakers.

The Old Dunstablians included James Walker (MJ), who’s a vice-president of the Dunstablians RUFC, fellow ex-Dunstablians player Mark Rawson (The Claw), and Pat Ward (Mr Purbeck Ice-Cream).

And their ranks were boosted by holiday rep John George and a “ringer”, Jesse, a Cardiff Blues under-16s player.

In the Young Dunstablians team were Chloe and Oliver Rawson (Oliver’s skills have been honed in the Dunstablians RUFC junior section), Jamie and Annabel Walker and Joe Ward.

Jim joked: “Not that the French were peeved – but they didn’t give us our trophy or our wine! Vive les Anglais!”

On a serious note, he said: “We had a great time and were asked to come back and play again next year.

“We were also asked to set up a match with a women’s team from Bedfordshire as some of the teams had mixed male/female for the touch rugby tournament.”

They went to France on holiday and all they brought back were international caps...

Who’s this pictured with brothers Alex and Gus Lombardo, at their Dunstable delicatessen?

It’s a very special visitor – acclaimed motivational speaker Louise Burfitt-Dons.

She paid a visit to the award-winning deli as part of a campaign called Boosting Britain.

Louise certainly gave a boost to the family-run business, in West Street, on her trip to the town.

She said: “It’s obvious the high street is suffering these days.

“But the deli has a friendly feel, a good vibe – and they serve a great cappuccino.”

I’m sure her praise for their cappuccino really did ‘perk’ them up!

It’s National Cupcake Week this week. Hurrah!

There’s no shortage of cupcakes on sale around this area.

And it’s your civic duty to try some, to join in the celebrations.

Yes, it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.

This is one special national week that really isn’t half-baked!
