Students were welcomed with a special ‘Big Family Breakfast’ to the brand new Houghton Regis Academy last week.
The school – formerly King’s Houghton Middle School in Parkside Drive – opened its doors on Friday to its new year five pupils.
A spokesman for the academy told the Gazette: “The breakfast was an opportunity for children and their parents to gently make the transition to their new school while meeting staff and teachers in an informal setting.”
Barry Day, chief executive of Greenwood Dale Foundation Trust – who are sponsoring the academy – said: “We are committed to building on the success of the former middle school to ensure pupils have the opportunity to reach their full potential, with no limit to what they can achieve.”
Initially the academy will cater for 453 students aged nine to 13, but from September 2013 the wheels will be put in motion to become a secondary school for up to 1,650 11-18-year-olds.
Mr Day added: “We are working closely with the Local Authority and headteachers and principals of other local schools and academies to ensure that there are sufficient secondary school places to cater for the predicted increase in pupil numbers resulting from a new housing development locally.
