Houghton Regis’ new University Technical College opens its doors to new students this week, and promises to be the gateway to a brighter future.
Built on the site of King’s Houghton Middle School in Parkside Drive, the institution is funded by Central Beds College,
With interest and investment from companies such as Vauxhall, British Aerospace and Liebherr, this vocational college promises to develop the skills young people need to make themselves attractive to employers.
Proud principal Bob Shore told the Gazette: “Everything is tailored to each individual. We are not a school, we are a work/university-style environment.
“I’m a miner’s son, and something my dad always said to me was ‘pride is a full fridge’.
“Education for its own sake can be nice, but education to feed your family is better. I don’t do craft for the daft.”
Since funding was approved 14 weeks ago, Mr Shore and his team have been working non-stop to get the brand-spanking new college ready in time.
Mr Shore added: “It’s not that I’m a martyr, I just believe that this is what education should be like.”
