A prominent Dunstable doctor has landed a top job a new NHS organisation that will take over from NHS Bedfordshire primary care trust next year.

Dr Paul Hassan, who has worked at his Priory Gardens practice for 29 years, was appointed as the Chief Clinical Officer Designate for Bedfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group.

The organisation – run and led by local clinicians – will invest more than £400m a year in planning and buying local health services after the takeover.

As the first Chief Clinical Officer, Dr Hassan will be responsible for ensuring that the organisation fulfils its duties to drive up improvement in the quality of services and the health of the local population whilst maintaining value for money.

Dr Hassan said: “I am thrilled to be taking up such an exciting opportunity.

It is a great privilege to lead local clinicians to improve the quality of health care for the residents of Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire in such financially challenging times.”

Dr Hassan – Chair of NHS Bedfordshire’s Clinical Executive Committee – will continue to work part-time at his Dunstable practice.
