A air ambulance helicopter was called to help a woman with serious injuries after a motorcycle collision in Dunstable on Monday (September 3), as residents called for something to be done about a corner they call an “accident hotspot”.

At about 4pm, the East of England Ambulance responded to a report of a motorcycle colliding with a garden wall in Langdale Road.

An ambulance crew from Luton and an operations manager also attended the scene.

The woman was taken to Lister Hospital in Stevenage with injuries to her back and leg.

Concerned Keith Ramsey, resident of nearby Lowther Road, told the Gazette: “A lady was thrown into a front garden by the impact of the crash, which was quite a distance.”

As the incident occurred in a residential area less than three miles from Luton and Dunstable Hospital, it was unusual for the air ambulance to attend – landing in the grounds of nearby Ardley Hill Lower School.

However, despite the precence of the helicopter, the woman was taken to a hospital in Stevenage by a land ambulance.

Ambulance service spokesman Gary Sanderson said: “The woman who we believe to be in her 30s received injuries to her back and leg and following treatment, stabilisation and immobilisation by land and air ambulance crews, she was taken to the Lister Hospital in Stevenage for further care.”

Mr Ramsey added: “Over the years we have had several incidents on that corner. Two years ago a drunk-driver destroyed my wife’s car.

“On that bend there is a school but it is not marked. There should be signs there.

“If this incident had happened at school leaving time you can only image what could have happened – it could have been horrific.

“We’ve complained to the police and the council, and also written to our local MP, Andrew Selous about it.”

Andrew Selous, MP for South West Beds, told the Gazette: “Road safety is something I take extremely seriously – too many people are killed or seriously injured on the road.

“I will absolutely look into this incident and contact the police and Central Beds Council and see if there is anything we can do.”
