Soul singer Alexander O’Neal’s hits include a song called Sunshine – and there was no shortage of that for the crowd of thousands at the open-air concert Dunstable Rocks!

About 5,000 people turned out for the concert on Saturday, August 18, where he was the headline act.

The sun shone all day, and the night air was still and sultry.

So many people went along that a giant outdoor TV screen was set up, showing everything happening on stage, to ensure everyone could join in the fun.

The excitement started at 12noon and went on until 10pm in Grove House Gardens.

Generations of music lovers were there, from youngsters through to veteran Dunstablians.

They brought picnic blankets, folding chairs, or just danced the night away.

And the packed programme didn’t disappoint them.

Performers included the popular Nathan Moore, of Brother Beyond fame; Back to Black the Amy Winehouse Experience; Leech; Gin House Delta; Subset; CC Smugglers; Rhetoric; and Adam Barker.

Dunstable Town Council organised the concert. Events and marketing officer Lisa Vincent said the turnout was “phenomenal”.

She said: “It was just incredible. We knew it was going to be popular, we did expect big numbers, that’s why we put the TV screen up.

“But the numbers that came just blew us away.

“Everyone had a good time. It was a lovely family atmosphere.”
