A HOUGHTON Regis teenager praised as “a fantastic representative of young people” was thrilled to meet the Princess Royal at a special event.

St John Ambulance Cadet Jessica Williamson, 17, was among more than 120 youngsters at the charity’s annual Young Achievers’ Reception.

They were invited as a reward for their outstanding work and commitment to the charity.

And they were all delighted to meet the princess, who is St John’s Commandant in Chief (Youth).

Jessica, a pupil at Queensbury School, Dunstable, said: “I’m so happy to have been invited to the Young Achievers’ Reception and I can’t believe I have been to visit Buckingham Palace, which was such an honour. I love being part of St John Ambulance. Going to the palace and meeting Her Royal Highness is something I’ll never forget.

“I am so proud to be part of St John Ambulance, and I will treasure the great experiences I have achieved. I believe every young person should be taught life-saving first aid.”

The event honoured St John Ambulance Badgers, Cadets and Young Carers who have made outstanding contributions during their time as young volunteers with the organisation.

Vicky Moore, St John’s principal youth officer for Beds, said: “Jessica is a fantastic representative of young people in Bedfordshire.

“She is always cheerful, friendly and willing to help others. She has been a Cadet for six years and has shown great commitment to the organisation.

“She has developed her leadership abilities and is keen to help younger or less experienced members of the organisation develop.”

At the reception, the youngsters also had a chance to discuss their experiences as a volunteer.

Wendy Human, the charity’s head of youth, said: “The reception is a great way for us to recognise the commitment and outstanding work of these young people.”

She said they had all proven themselves to be outstanding individuals and the charity hoped that they were pleased with the opportunity to meet the Princess Royal and enjoy the surroundings of Buckingham Palace for the day.

Wendy added: “Jessica Williamson has been an asset to her local community all year round and she fully deserved to be rewarded with an invitation to the Palace.”
