Watling Lower had a full week of celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of the school and the start of the Olympics.
They had a torch procession and a ‘mini Olympics’ sports day, with medals donated by the Sainsbury’s Dunstable branch.
The following day saw a special 50-year reunion of ex-pupils and staff, while at the end of the week current pupils and staff dressed up for a 1960s day. Pupils also enjoyed a Jubilee ‘street party’ as part of the action-packed week. They even made their own decorative hats.
Co-ordinator Elisabeth Pynn said: “It was really, really wonderful. We set up in the dining area as the weather forecast was very dodgy.
“The WI donated the bench we used for the table. The children had a wonderful time.”
The school also buried a time capsule, sponsored by the National Grid, for pupils in another 50 years time to discover.
> Ashton Middle School also welcomed the Olympics with a fun day of their own.
As well as a talent contest, special stalls and an orchestra, the High Street North, Dunstable, school also hosted a series of sports challenges for staff and pupils.
These included a special relay race in which competitors were required to carry a contaiiner of water over obstacles without spilling. Deputy head Shirley Hollis said: “It was really successful. We decided to do something a bit different.”
