SHELTERED accomodation residents in Dunstable and Houghton Regis have been awarded £10,000 to help get them online and surfing the net.

The Sheltered Tenants Action Group applied for funding after speaking to tenants about a project called Computers at Sheltered Housing.

Backed by Central Beds Council’s Tenant Participation Team, the bid was successful and the group received cash from Lottery Awards For All.

The money will be spent not only on computers, printers and software, but also accessibility devices such as large keyboards, large monitors and trackball mice.

STAG member Les Ford said: “We have worked very hard on this successful partnership project with Central Bedfordshire Council.

From personal experience I know that this new equipment will make a big difference to residents’ lives.”

Executive member for housing, councillor Carole Hegley, said: “This is a real success story for everyone involved.

“Whether it’s emailing or speaking to loved ones, shopping, researching a hobby or interest or just updating social media, there’s no end to what we can do online these days, so it’s great that these tenants will have that opportunity.”

STAG will also be providing tenants with basic training in the months leading up to Christmas.
