MORE than 240 people were caught watching television without a licence in Dunstable during the first six months of this year, according to new figures released by TV Licensing.
The average evasion rate remains at a low of just over five per cent, meaning that almost 95 per cent of properties are correctly licensed.
Victoria Sykes of TV Licensing said: “Unfortunately, a minority of people do not pay for their licence, which is unfair to the law-abiding majority who do pay.”
A colour TV Licence costs £145.50 and is required to watch or record programmes using a TV set or any other equipment. Anyone watching TV illegally faces a £1,000 fine.
