TOWN are remaining cautious that striker Jon Shaw will be fit enough to play some kind of part against Championship side Ipswich Town in Luton’s latest pre-season friendly this afternoon, writes Mike Simmonds.
The much heralded summer signing from Gateshead has been restricted to a watching brief since penning a two-year deal at Kenilworth Road in the summer due to a persistent calf injury.
Assistant boss Alan Neilson said: “Jon is still with the physio. It’s touch and go.
“He’s getting better all the time, but with calf injuries you’ve got to be very careful.
“I had a lot of problems with mine in my career, but I’m sure Jon will be fit very soon.”
The outcome for midfielder Danny Spiller isn’t quite as positive though, with the former Gillingham player still out with an Achilles problem.
Neilson continued: “I think Danny is going to see specialist now, but fingers crossed it will be sooner rather than later with him.
“It’s unfortunate but sometimes it happens. We’ve got midfield players, JJ (O’Donnell) has come through and been absolutely superb, Adam Watkins, Alex Lawless can there too.”
Although Garry Richards is still not 100 per cent fit either, and Alex Lacey will miss out with a shoulder injury, Neilson didn’t think club would be bringing in any other trialists for today’s clash.
He said: “At the minute we’ve got no plans to bring anyone in for the weekend. We’re always looking to improve the squad, so we might still do that.
“It’s up to the players who have got the shirts to say do we really need someone to come in? Yes we want competition for places, but it has to be right person to come into the football team.”
