Empty retail unit figures to be reassessed

COUNCILLOR Nigel Young wants to compartmentalise the way figures relating to vacant retail units in Dunstable are viewed, in order to report figures “more accurately and more currently”.

Speaking at the meeting of Dunstable Town Council and Central Beds Council’s joint committee on Thursday (July 12), he said: “We want to split the town into sections – High Street, Quadrant, Ashton Square – and be able to say ‘this many of this many were empty’.”

“We’re concerned about the heart of the town.”

Currently, figures show that there are 47 vacant units in Dunstable compared with a total of 31 units in nine surrounding towns and villages.

The town with the next-highest number of vacant retail units was Leighton Buzzard, with only 11.

Mr Young says that the recalculated figures will be available by the next joint committee meeting.
