CHILDREN and parents are becoming increasingly frustrated over a new BMX track that remains closed to the public.
The circuit is part of a £3million development at Creasey Park Community Centre, Dunstable, that was supposed to be ready last year but remains close to completion without an opening date in sight.
Former Mayor of Dunstable, Mike Mullany, said in April 2011 that he was “particularly looking forward” to the track opening.
But resident Kelly Rance has written to Central Bedfordshire Council expressing her concerns. She said: “So yet another school holiday has passed and I suppose people are going to moan when the kids break into the track because all they want to do is use it.
“I was told there would be a big opening ceremony in June 2011.”
James Slack, Creasey Park Centre manager, told the Gazette this week: “At this stage I can’t give a definite date. We’re waiting for contractors to install a gate that will prevent motor vehicles from entering the track and ruining it for everyone else.
“It’s a fantastic track and it will be brilliant, but when we open it it has to be safe.”
Councillor Brian Spurr, of Central Beds Council, said: “A final safety inspection was undertaken recently which highlighted the need for a safety feature to prevent motorbikes being taken in and used on the track. As a result we have ordered a gate which will take some weeks to be made and installed. This is an important feature which will ensure that those using the track will be safe and the track will not be damaged through motorbike use.
“We opened for a trial period over half term, so the track could be tested, and we have received positive feedback from those who used it. As soon as the new safety gate is fitted, we will open it up for the whole community to use.”
