DUNSTABLE man Richard Marsh reached the summit of the highest mountain in Africa to raise £8,000 in memory of his late father.
Richard, 27, was joined by friend Jamie Young – son of Central Beds councillor for Dunstable Downs Nigel Young – at the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro in aid of Help For Heroes.
Richard’s father, Ken Marsh, who served around the world during his time with the Armed Forces, died after a car accident in 2010.
The pair, who set themselves a fundraising target of £5,000, prepared for the 19,341ft high feat by recruiting a fitness instructor and scaling Ben Nevis in Scotland.
Jamie said: “It was tough but ultimately extremely rewarding – great fun. I’d recommend it to anyone.”
“Climbing Kilimanjaro was without a doubt physically gruelling, emotionally draining and at times defied what we thought our bodies were capable of.”
Richard said: “It represented the perfect tribute to my dad and to our chosen charity, Help For Heroes.
“Every moment will be savoured and remembered as one of the greatest achievements of both of our lives.
“We would like to say a massive thank you to all who supported and donated to our cause. We hope our summit picture makes you all smile.”
