Diamond day at Brewers Hill

QUEEN Elizabeth II was not the only one to mark a diamond jubilee this month – Brewers Hill Middle School in Dunstable celebrated a 60th anniversary of its own.

Staff and students marked the anniversary of the opening of the school, while also honouring Her Majesty’s milestone on Friday, June 1.

The class of 1952 was the school’s first cohort – the same year that Elizabeth II became Queen.

A fancy dress competition was held for pupils kitted out in red, white and blue instead of their usual uniform.

The school’s diamond jubilee year is already a momentous one as it is also currently in the process of converting into a Barnfield-sponsored academy.

Brewers Hill is due to be renamed Barnfield Park Academy as of next year, joining Barnfield South, Barnfield West and Barnfield Studio academies in Luton.

The school says the move will provide it with “access to the generic academy benefits of greater operational flexibility and scope for more innovative curriculum delivery and will open access to the Federation’s numerous state-of-the-art facilities and outstanding educational model”.

Principal Anita Harvey said: “It is a very special academic year for us.

“We are thrilled to have been part of the Dunstable community for six decades and we know that by converting to a Barnfield Academy we will provide even greater opportunities for our children as we move forward.”

Barnfield chief executive Pete Birkett said: “This festive celebration heralds the start of a bright new future for Brewers Hill in partnership with Barnfield.

“We wish them a very happy 60th anniversary and look forward to the exciting times that lie ahead.”
