SOUTH West Beds MP Andrew Selous’ call for schools to raise awareness of the importance of spelling has prompted a response from All Saints Academy.

Mr Selous said in the House of Commons that one Dunstable upper school only corrects three spelling errors in pupils’ work to protect their “self esteem”.

It is still not known which of the town’s three upper schools he was referring to, but a report in last week’s Gazette encouraged the Houghton Road school to get in touch.

Principal Tom Waterworth said: “We take literacy and marking very seriously at All Saints Academy.

“We place huge emphasis on improving students’ literacy, including the use of tutor time. Since we opened in September 2009 we have given extra time to English as we recognise the importance of students’ literacy in their adult life.

“Our marking is certainly extremely thorough and conscientious.”

Queensbury School stated its policy on spelling in last week’s paper. Manshead was also contacted by the Gazette, but the school is still preparing its response.
