Fire ‘destroys’ two-storey barn house

A TWO storey barn was “destroyed” by a blaze in the village of Kensworth in the early hours of yesterday morning (May 23).

Beds fire service responded to a number of reports of smoke bellowing from the building off Common Road at around 1.15am.

Two engines from Dunstable and a water cannon from Toddington responded to find the barn “well alight”, and stayed until 3.30am tackling the fire and dampening down the scene.

It is believed that the barn was undergoing building work to be converted into a residential property by the owner.

No one was inside or hurt by the fire, and no valuable items are believed to have been in the building at the time.

A neighbour from told the Gazette: “I was woken by smoke drifting through my bedroom window – I’m a couple of hundred metres away.

“The barn was so close to the homes, it’s amazing that it didn’t spread.

“The site has seen two blazes within a couple of years – another farm barn went up a while back”

The cause and origin of the fire was still being investigated at the time the Herald&Post went to press, but the fire service have passed on all information to the police.
