Boys battling it out in live competition

A BAND of brothers (and a cousin and a friend) are hoping to make it to the final stages of a national music competition.

LOLA are playing the area final of Live and Unsigned at the Hayes Theatre in London on Saturday, and if they get the judges’ and the public’s vote they could be performing at the O2 London grand final where there’s a chance to win £10,000 and an international festival tour.

The boys in the band are Luton lads Anthony Hailes, 22, on lead guitar, 15-year-old bass guitarist Matthew Dobson, guitarist and lead singer James Dobson, 19, and drummer Dan Wilson, 24, from Dunstable.

Frontman James said: “Anthony and I are cousins and we’d always wanted to be in a band.

“My little brother Matthew is still at school at Barnfield West Academy but he’s really good, and I think we all work really well together now. We write all our own music and we’re just trying to do as many gigs as we can to make ourselves known in the area.”

James said one of their best gigs they’ve done so far is supporting Babyshambles at Charlie Browns in Luton.

Drummer Dan said: “There’s a great music scene in Luton and Beds and it’s nice getting to know other bands and supporting each other.”

The band will be recording their first EP in July which they hope to release shortly afterwards, and thanks to the power of the internet they already have fans as far-flung as Estonia.
