TRIBUTES have been paid to a Dunstable-born man who played a prominent role in local politics.
David Barker died, aged 62, on April 18 after a long battle with cancer.
Mr Barker represented Priory Ward on Dunstable Town Council from 1985 to 1993. He later joined Beds County Council, serving the Manshead and Houghton Regis wards.
Duncan Ross, a fellow county councillor, said: “He was a courteous, conscientious and dry-humoured man who was an excellent representative for his constituents.
After joining the Labour Party in 1974, the former Britain Street, Dunstable, schoolboy became a union secretary at Electrolux in Luton.
“He was very much a people person and incredibly articulate,” said his brother Gerry.
Mr Barker loved Mozart’s music and 1930s history, and was a supporter of Unicef, Amnesty International and the Red Cross.
He is survived by brother Gerry and sisters Sylvia and Margaret. The funeral service takes place on Friday, May 4 at Luton Vale Crematorium from 1.45 pm. Call Dunstable Funeral Service on 01582 477000.
