Wins were a piece of cake!

CLEVER cake creations from the Dunstable area earned helpings of national acclaim at London Excel’s Cake International 2012.

Hayley Pfeifer, of The Cake House, was thrilled to win a gold award for her Marty the Zebra cake.

The striking design stood out in the sculpted novelty cake category at the show.

Hayley, who owns the High Street South/Ashton Square business, said: “I couldn’t believe that I’d won the gold!”

She said: “There are so many different categories you can choose to enter, but the novelty cakes are what I enjoy.

“I love it when people come into the shop and ask for something completely different, and then seeing the customer’s face when they return for their edible sculpture!”

Central Bedfordshire College sugarcraft student Emma Matthews also picked up a gold award, for her celebration cake.

Denise Connor, a sugarcraft tutor at the college, achieved a bronze award for her wedding cake design.

> Scooping silver at the show was enough to put a smile on one cake’s usually-grouchy face.

Michelle Shulman of Cakes By Shelly in Gurney Court, Eaton Bray, won silver with her Sesame Street Grouch cake in the ‘regular shape with a novel design’ category, in the Ideal Professional Cake Decorator of the Year section.

She also saw her giant 2ft Cookie Monster cake awarded bronze in the ‘sculpted cakes’ category.

Michelle, whose Grouch cake missed out on gold by four points, said: “The Sesame Street theme wasn’t intentional. I was talking to my friend who said he preferred cookies to cakes and it went from there. I don’t do things by halves – if you’re going to do something you might as well do it properly.

“I like competitions because I can let my imagination run wild.

“I was worried the judges would mark me down because the bin was dented, but of course that was intentional!”
