Still time for nature awards

The deadline to sign up for Bedfordshire’s prestigious Living Countryside Awards is fast approaching, but there is still time to submit your entries.

Run by the Bedfordshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE), the awards offer the chance to showcase a successful rural project that improves the county’s appearance, preserves its character, or promotes sustainability.

The deadline for entries is 21st May 2012, while the three categories are: Landscape Improvement, Historic and New Buildings and Sustainable Living.

Projects can be nominated by anyone, while examples of the range of eligible activities include:

- Creation of nature reserves and ponds.

- Tree and hedgerow planting.

- Environmentally sensitive and sustainable farming practices.

- Conservation of historic sites.

- Imaginative building design.

- Local production and sale of food.

- Traditional crafts such as coppicing, hedging, thatching and smithery.

A panel of experts will visit nominated entries during the summer, ahead of a special awards ceremony RSPB’s Sandy Headquarters in October.

Entry forms can be downloaded from: http://www.cprebeds.plus.com/lcawards.pdf
