WHIPSNADE neighbours are being urged to come along to a meeting to voice their views on what the future should hold for their village hall, pictured.

They are asked to attend the annual meeting of the venue’s trustees, in the hall at 8pm on May 1.

An announcement about the trustees’ meeting said that Whipsnade Village Hall was built in around 1927 and has been serving the village ever since.

It has been the venue for countless celebrations and dances, and acted as a school for Second World War evacuees.

Over the years, it has also been a meeting place for organisations such as the Scouts and groups for flower and art enthusiasts, and for activities including amateur dramatics and indoor sports.

The statement said: “It has served the community well. Now, sadly, time has taken its toll on the structure and it is in need of much refurbishment – even replacement.

“It is under-used and increasingly more difficult to sustain.

“During the first week in April, it was necessary to rewire the sub-standard lighting system before hirers were due to use the facility.

“In a never-ending task, the village hall trustees lobby to obtain grants, locally and nationally.

“They devise fundraising schemes that help to ensure that the historic building can, in the future, be utilised and supported by the community that it has supported for 85 years.

“On Tuesday, May 1, local people will have the opportunity to voice their opinions and views on the hall’s future and submit suggestions for its use.

“With a unanimous ‘yes’ from the community to retain the hall, the trustees will have ammunition that will undoubtedly assist them in their quest for grants.

“No authority is going to support a community venture that is not supported by the community.

“All residents are urged to attend the meeting.”
