Busway art part of a new journey

AN artist has been commissioned to create four sculptures to adorn the Dunstable and Houghton Regis sections of the new guided busway.

Artist Pete Moorhouse has been out working with schoolchildren, college students, library users and the local history society to get ideas.

The aim of the sculptures will be to celebrate prominent events, people, businesses and buildings in the towns during the past 100 years, and they will be in place by the opening of the busway in March 2013.

Pupils from Kings Middle School in Houghton Regis have already submitted their ideas, while art students from Central Beds College have taken up the project as part of their foundation coursework.

Central Beds Councillor Nigel Young said: “These sculptures will reflect the pride that we have today in both Dunstable and Houghton Regis and the contributions from all age groups of the local community will make them all the more relevant.”

But the news prompted a critical response from residents on the Dunstable Gazette’s Facebook page.

Kendall Morris said: “My idea is simply to stop the council wasting even more money by giving us things we don’t want.”

Tracey Scott said: “Sorry... but all we ever wanted and asked for is a bypass.”
