A LADY is seeking legal advice after she claims to have found a shard of glass in a jar of curry sauce that could have killed her.
Bozena Srodecki, of Canesword Road, nearly choked on the inch-long object after cooking for her family using Tesco’s Light Choices Tikka Masala cooking sauce on February 19.
Mrs Srodecki, 65, said: “Imagine me swallowing this, and it cut my throat or oesophagus – I could have died.”
“I know I could have choked on it so I coughed and I spat it out. Obviously I couldn’t believe it.”
Mrs Srodecki had cooked a chicken curry for her husband, daughter and friend when she claims to have found the foreign object in the £1.24 jar of sauce, purchased from Tesco Express in Langdale Road.
Due to a fear of further objects, the whole meal was hastily disposed of.
Mrs Srodecki, who moved to England from Poland 40 years ago, sent a letter of complaint to Tesco customer service.
The supermarket giant’s response was apologetic. They said: “We take the quality of our products extremely seriously and we have specific quality controls with all our suppliers.
“It is very rare that any foreign body is able to pass through our quality control process and I am very sorry you feel we have let you down.”
Tesco also advised that she return the offending item to the town centre store so that staff could fill out a customer complaint form on her behalf.
However, she wishes to take things further after hearing a story about something similar happening to a friend.
She said: “I heard someone that found something similar in a jar of food once, and all they got was a £20 voucher. That is nothing.”
On March 2 Mrs Srodecki was paid a visit by a representative of Trading Standards, who she says told her to speak to a solicitor.
Tesco also said to Mrs Srodecki: “I hope everything you buy from us in the future is of the high standard you rightly deserve.”
