TWO toddlers who had operations to tackle their hip condition are the inspiration behind a fundraising event to be attended by a snooker legend.

Isabelle Henzel and Maisie McCarthy – both 18 months old – suffer from hip dysplasia, a condition where a newborn’s hip joint is misaligned.

Isabelle’s mother, Leanne McCarthy, 23, of Chelsea Gardens, Houghton Regis, has organised the fundraiser, featuring winner of the 1985 Mercentile Credit Classic Willie Thorne – who is the friend of a friend she met through hip dysplasia groups on Facebook.

The event will be in aid of Steps, a charity that supports children with lower limb conditions.

Isabelle underwent open reduction surgery on December 10 after a failed closed reduction in July, while her cousin Maisie, from Woburn Sands, had closed reduction surgery on December 28.

Both girls wear specially made ‘spica casts’, which cover most of their bodies to hold their hips in place. It remains to be seen whether or not the operations were successful, but Leanne hopes the fundraiser will raise awareness of the condition.

She said: “Steps have helped us a lot where others haven’t. They’ve taught us how to care for the girls while they’re in their casts.”

The event – including a children’s entertainer, face-painting and a raffle – will be held at the United Services Club in High Street South, Dunstable, on Saturday, March 10, from 11am to 2pm.
